When a thick layer of composite cannot be applied, opaque dentin can be used instead of regular dentin to reduce opaquer shades and achieve a deeper color. Opaque dentin can also be used as a cervical shade (by choosing a darker shade than the crown, for example, OD A3.5 instead of A3) to obtain more intense colors in the cervical and root areas.
